Steamboat Willie
Co-written, directed, produced and fully voiced by Walt Disney himself, Steamboat Willie lays the foundation for all the movies we love. With the launch of Disney + we can now go back and revisit the true classics, the ones without the class, and finally see where that clip of Mickey whistling actually comes from (I recommend watching it just for that)
Steamboat Willie is actually a spoof of the film Steamboat
Bill Jr which came out the same year, 1928. The animated version follows a plucky
mouse on a boat who likes causing mischief – if I’m honest I can’t see the character
going very far. The short film mainly revolves around animal violence with
highlights such as the goat who eats a guitar, the cow that gets kidnapped and
the pigs that get abused – the golden age of cinema.
To give it credit, the animation of Steamboat Willie is
pretty incredible! It was the first Disney animation with synchronised sound
and set a precedent for all the cartoons we’ve grown to love. The whole thing
only lasts about seven minutes so you might as well check it out.
Marks out of ten?
A respectable six.
For a
balanced review of any movie you need the thoughts of more than one generation.
My mum chooses her words wisely, so wise that she can condense a whole movie
into three words. My dad on the other hand can fall asleep after three words, but
did he fall asleep during this one?
Mum’s three words of wisdom:
Really
quite odd
The snooze news:
Did Dad fall asleep during
Steamboat Willie? Surprisingly
not – it must have brought back memories from his childhood!
